if you book through the cruise line, and they lower the price after you book you can receive that new price adjustment, I have cruised several times with Royal Caribbean and book with them directly and have never had a problem. I leave for another cruise at the end of the month and booked it for 379 a person and watched it after booking and it down to 229 a person at one point and was refunded the difference

Being an agent, my answer is biased, but just because I know how a good travel agent can guide a first time (or repeat) cruiser to the best option.

There are many variables involved in booking a cruise, and a good agent will help you select from them. The price will be at most the same as what the cruise line offers directly. Some agents (and some online booking engines) discount their prices. You should be aware that most likely, this comes with a reduction in the level of customer service (especially after booking).

If it was me, I would just research what is available at the major sites like
http://www.expedia.com
http://www.travelocity.com
http://www.orbitz.com

These will give you details of the ships, cabins, itineary, what’s available on the ship and on-shore when you stop.

There are probably other specific cruise sites, but I don’t know any off the top of my head and I have only ever used the ones listed above for flights and hotels.

You do not state where you plan to get a cruise from or how long you want to go for.

If it is a short cruise and you want to see a few islands, you might want to consider starting and finishing in Puerto Rico.

Just check the sites and see what is available for the various starting points – Miami, Puerto Rico etc..

October is Hurricane season in teh Caribbean, but I would not let that stop you as the cruise will just divert if it encounters bad weather or take out travel insurance to cover you for the cancellation of the cruise due to hurricanes.
